Difference Between Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 and 821.

While watching the live launch of OnePlus 3T on Facebook, we saw a lot of people regretting buying OnePlus 3 just before launch and some people even received their OnePlus 3 on the day of launch and they all were regretting buying OnePlus 3 just because of the OnePlus 3T has a Snapdragon 821. But, the Snapdragon 821 really makes that much of difference? Let's find out.

The Snapdragon 820 or MSM8996 has four custom made Kyro cores divided into two different clusters. The first pair is made for high performance and runs at a maximum clock speed of 2.15 GHz each while the other duo is dedicated to power efficiency and are restricted to the highest frequency of 1.6 GHz. The same arrangement of Kyro cores is present in the Snapdragon 821 or MSM8996 Pro with the performance oriented pair running up to a higher 2.4 GHz each and the each of the two battery saving cores clocking 2.0 GHz. This results in 10 percent increased performance in the newer chip.

Both the processors are build on the same architecture and they both are build on 14nm finFET. But, surely Snapdragon 821 brings some improvements along with it. According to the Qualcomm, Snapdragon 821 has 10% lesser boot and app loading times compared to 820 and 5%  improvement in graphics performance as the Adreno 530 clocks at 653 MHz compared to 624 MHz in 820.

The Snapdragon 821 also comes with Snapdragon VR SDK which will make easy for developers to develop apps. This is extremely useful for developers and fully compatible with Google Day dream.

Now, Snapdragon 821 also supports the Dual PDAF and extends the range of laser auto focus which will help you to focus on object which are far from camera and the 821 supports the camera upto 28 MP compared to 25 MP on 820. And by giving all these features Qualcomm claims to be Snapdragon 821 5% more power efficient than the 820.

As you can see Snapdragon 821 surely brings some improvements rather than just overclocking. Yes, it is also true that it will not bring much of a performance boost compared to 820. An average user will can't even able to tell the difference between 820 and 821 in day to day usage. OnePlus 3 users remember one thing all of these added features also comes at a extra price OnePlus 3 is still a bang for your buck.
